Fenix E-STAR backup torch combines power from a NiMH rechargeable battery and a hand-crank dynamo. The pencil-sized NiMH rechargeable battery with low self-discharge and 1300 mAh capacity charges inside the torch via a USB-C connector. Thanks to this, the torch can briefly deliver output of up to 100 lumens. In an emergency, the built-in dynamo powered by a lever that is simply pressed with your fingers can be used as an energy source. The dynamo charges the NiMH rechargeable battery partially, but mainly the built-in supercapacitor, which can deliver energy for up to two minutes of light on a single charge (approximately 15–20 seconds of dynamo operation). When powered by the dynamo, the torch's runtime is theoretically infinite and depends only on your hand's endurance. The torch can operate without an inserted rechargeable battery; in an emergency, it can be replaced with a standard AA battery. Fenix E-STAR is an excellent backup torch for situations where you will not have long-term access to mains electricity or spare batteries.

All torch parameters (light output, runtime on batteries, water resistance, beam distance and impact resistance) are measured in accordance with the ANSI/NEMA FL 1-2009 standard.

Use

An insulation cover may be on the rechargeable battery from the factory. Remove it from the rechargeable battery before first use. To switch on the torch, slide the rectangular switch to the front position; the torch will always light at the lowest power. Sliding it the opposite way switches the torch off. Light modes are switched by pressing the square button. To activate turbo mode at 100 lumens, hold the square button for more than 0.5 seconds. After releasing the button, the torch returns to the last used light mode.

Overheat protection – after one minute of operation at maximum turbo power, the torch switches to a lower mode.

NiMH rechargeable battery charging – unclip the rubber cover of the charging connector on the side of the torch and connect the supplied cable to the torch (USB-C connector); connect the other end of the cable to a computer or USB adapter to mains electricity or a car (not included in the package). During charging, the indicator LED next to the button glows red and turns green when fully charged. After charging the torch, securely seal the charging connector again with the rubber cover. Charging a fully discharged rechargeable battery takes approximately 3 hours using a 1A power source. In an emergency, the torch can be used while charging, but only the 20 lumen mode will be available and charging time will be extended.

Dynamo power – if the rechargeable battery is discharged, the built-in dynamo powered by a lever that is simply pressed with your fingers can be used to power the torch. The dynamo charges the NiMH rechargeable battery partially, but mainly the built-in supercapacitor, which can deliver energy for up to two minutes of light on a single charge (approximately 15–20 seconds of dynamo operation).

Warning

Do not disassemble sealed parts of the torch yourself; this will void the warranty. If using a disposable AA battery, remove it from the torch if you will not use it for a long time, or if the battery is discharged. This will prevent battery leakage and subsequent damage to the torch. Insert the battery with the positive pole facing the torch head.
